E-BIKES PART 1 - FRONT HUB VS REAR HUB VS CENTRAL MOTOR. WHAT WORKS BEST
Welcome you here is Danny. And today I'm going to show you three different types of ebikes. This is the first episode in the series about Ebikes because I do love these bikes. These are very helpful for many different types of riding. And so on this episode, we are comparing the front hub motor versus the central motor versus the rear hub motor. The cons and pros for each of these bikes in isn't that easy to find out because it will depend on many different factors. And so I'm gonna try to compare these and tell you what kind of rider in what kind of terrain will might choose some of these three. So let's start when comparing these three types of Motors, we're going to look at different factors. Like what is the right feel on the bike? What is the weight distribution, front and rear wheels or the balance?
And also what are the limitations in terms of the components? So here we have the motor in the rehab. One of the limitations here is that we need a specifically designed wheel for it. So this wheel should withstand not only the weight of the motor, the bike being heavier, but also the power of the motor, plus the power of our legs, because here we have the rear drive. So both our legs and the motor will put the power on the rear wheel.
You can find many different opinions on the internet about this type of model. Many would say that we have here more weight on the rear wheel, which is untrue because it depends on so many factors. What kind of bike you have? Do you have a front suspension or not and how heavy it is and also what type of battery you have, how large it is and where it is located. So we have a rear hub motor here.
And this is the battery. It is pretty huge. And that's the factor, which is very important for the weight distribution. How is the battery located? This one is inside the frame. So it is integrated. If this battery was located at the back, then we would have much more weight on the rear wheel. But on this bike, such a location of the battery doesn't make this bike completely balanced, because here we have pretty heavy front suspension fork. And so the front end is much heavier than the rear end, the rear hub motor, the battery in the main tube of the frame and the front suspension for pretty heavy. What's the weight distribution?
Rear end, pretty heavy front and even have much, much heavier. So surprise, surprise. We have the rear motor and much more weight on the front wheel, the central motor located just by the crank set and the battery assembled to those two bolts for the boggle cage. What's the weight distribution, the rear and fields pretty heavy, the front end as well. Pretty balanced solution.
Remember that we don't have a suspension for key this is just the rigid fork. So if there was a front suspension for on this 27 five plus size, then the front end will be heavier than the rear end. Let's start with the weight distribution on the bike. With the motor in the front tab, the front end feels pretty heavy, the rear end a bit lighter. We have the battery here at the back and also the front suspension.
I would say that the front suspension adds more weight, so pretty balanced, but a little bit more weight on the front wheel. So content process for this type of motor. As I said, the limitation here will be that we need a specifically designed wheel. And also, if you need to remove the rear wheel for transportation, it will be much more time consuming than on the centrally located one. But then the advantages there will be lots of them.
First, off, the motor in the rear hub will support our legs by putting the power on to the rear wheel. And that's the most natural way for most of the cycle. And you can read for ebike conversion roadbike in previous article. They feel that having the drive on the rear wheel feels just natural and it's just good for most of the riders. Another thing is also that this motor will not wear our chain down. So it is only our legs that's transferring the power through the chain to the rear wheel because the motor will have the direct drive on the rear wheel.
That's a great advantage. We will not be wearing down the drive train as quickly as on the centrally located motor. And finally, we want to have a versatile bike. And here we have, for example, three by eight drive train. You can have nine, you can have ten years in the rear, but you can just choose whatever you want to have on your drive trend.
The cranks, the chain set the cassette because the motor is in the rear hub. That means, for example, if you go out of juice and you don't have more energy in your battery, you can simply use very low gearing on your bike and get home without getting so much tired. So this is a great advantage also, because this bike is just heavier. So three by drive train is really good. And that's what this type of motor will allow you to use on your bike.
And here we have the motor located centrally just by the crane or the bottom bracket area. I can tell you right away that this one will be the best suit the best for offroad riding. Why is it? So here we have the weight a bit lower than on the Motors, which will be located in the hub. So we have the lower center of the gravity, which is very important for balancing such location of the motor and the battery right here doesn't really change the way distribution between the front and rear wheel on your bike.
So we could say that the balance front rear remains the same. The center of gravity goes down comparing to the front or rear hub motor. Very important factor here. Super important factor here is also that when using this type of motor, you can still choose between different with whatever you want to have you want to have through ACS or quick releases or just any type of rims you would like to have have this type of drift in the motor doesn't require any type, certain type of the wheel, so you can just have whatever you want.
And this will be pretty important for mountain bikers. That's the advantage. Another advantage of this drive train will be also removing and putting the wheels back on the bike is much easier than on those with the Motors in the hub, either the re one or the front one. And here the disadvantages I've been talking about off road mountain bikers who will like this drive train. Maybe the main disadvantage for them will be that yes, we do have a lower center of the gravity, but also, as you can see, this motor stands out and it is more difficult for us to jump over or ride over higher obstacles.
So that will be disadvantage for both mountain bikers and city users or commuters on this type of drive train. The disadvantage will be the chain line. It changes drastically and we cannot choose between different crank it so we cannot have a triple a double crank it here. This is one by in this case it's one by ten. So when you are going out of juice, just remember you have one by drive train, so not really possible to go up the Hill with this huge and heavy bike. If you don't have really low gears changing the gears in such Motors with such motor, you need to have gear sensor which will turn switch the motor off while you are changing the gears.
Otherwise it will be very easy for you to snap the chain. And also with this type of motor, it is easier for us to lose the chain because when you are riding and there are some vibration and you don't pedal, the motor can still turn this chain ring a little bit to the front and then the chain goes off. So it happens with this type of more often the front HAB motor. I must tell you, I do like this type of drive for our bicycles. Our chain rings our ranks at our chain more because it will work independently from our drive train. Secondly, this is the all wheel drive. This motor drives the front wheel and our legs transfer the power through the rear wheel. So we have a very interesting design. Now some users will tell you that on the steep climbs when it's slippery, the front wheel can sleep a little bit.
